Flash Focus: LaTaesia Snyder

This criminology major is finding inspiration in study-away programs and advocacy

Meet LaTaesia Snyder, a junior major in the Department of Sociology and Criminology with a minor in pre-law from Akron, Ohio, who鈥檚 making the most of her opportunities to learn about the American justice system.

Snyder recently began her fall semester as part of the 久久午夜羞羞影院免费观看 Columbus Program in State Issues, a study-away program that allows students to study policy, explore politics and meet Ohio representatives.

鈥淭he Columbus program has just begun, but I have already learned so much about policy and the politics behind it all,鈥 Snyder told 久久午夜羞羞影院免费观看 State Today. 鈥淚 even spoke with State Rep. Munira Abdullahi and Sen. William P. Demora, conversations I'll think about for a lifetime.鈥

Before joining the Columbus Program, Snyder took part in Rwanda After Genocide, an education-abroad program where she studied culture and tradition while learning about peace and reconciliation efforts following the 1994 genocide.

鈥淚 was given a different perspective on forgiveness after learning about the peace and reconciliation of victims and perpetrators of the genocide that happened in 1994,鈥 Snyder said.

Back on campus, Snyder served on the 鈥 marketing committee, worked as a lab leader for CommUNITY Lab, served as a University College Representative and participated in .

She credits Sarah Schmidt, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science, who has overseen the Rwanda and Columbus programs, with helping her pursue these experiences.

鈥淓ver since I met her, it has just been opportunity after opportunity. She is like a gardener and I'm the plant, and I just get so much water,鈥 Snyder said.

One of Snyder鈥檚 favorite courses so far has been 鈥淧olice Role,鈥 which included a ride-along with local police officers, gaining insight into their day-to-day experiences.

Despite her busy schedule, Snyder remains focused on her ultimate goal of becoming a lawyer. She is motivated by a desire to advocate for those without a voice, giving clients the opportunity to be heard and share their truth.

Snyder鈥檚 hard work has been recognized with several honors, including the LeBron James Family Foundation Scholarship, awarded all four years, and the .

With each new experience, Snyder is one step closer to her dream of becoming a lawyer, a role in which she can use her voice to foster a voice for others.
